Spring Awakening

Celebrated for centuries, the spring equinox, or vernal equinox, has historically represented more than just the first day of spring. It goes beyond birds chirping and flowers blooming—but who doesn’t love those two things? For many, it’s a symbol for an awakening, rebirth, fertility, and new beginnings. 

Equinox is a Latin word and means, equality of night and day. During the equinox the Sun is directly above the hemisphere, which means that both halves of the Earth are soaking up the Sun's rays equally and the length of day and night are equal. We have two equinoxes a year – one in fall and then one in spring and both days carry an abundance of symbolism and meaning.

Many different cultures and spiritual practices, including Wiccans, Pagans and even astrologers believe that during this time, there is a very significant relationship between the Earth and the Sun. The ending of winter signifies the return of the Sun bringing light down for longer days. This gives us new crops and resets the balance of fertility on an earthly and spiritual level. For human beings (and of course animals), the season change means emerging from sleep or a cocoon to start a new life. 

 

Some spiritual guides and astrologers also claim that during the spring equinox, the layer between the spiritual and physical world is much more delicate which makes it easier for us to receive messages from the universe and helps us recognize signs that we may not normally pick up on. 

 

It’s also important to see this time as a chance to clean out any lingering, lifeless energy in your spaces, which is why some people feel pulled to clean out their homes, finish or start projects and purge unnecessary items. This is also the perfect season to refresh your style and give yourself a sort of rebirth.
