More than just a trending hashtag on social media, Women’s History Month has been observed since 1987 and is dedicated to reflecting on the contributions of women like Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Harriet Tubman, Abigail Adams and more in United States history. The event evolved from a weeklong celebration of women’s contributions to society, culture and history in 1978 and was organized by the school district of Sonoma, California. Hundreds of students wrote and read essays for a contest about the, “Real Woman,” and then held a parade.
Over the years, more school districts and communities followed, and in 1980, President Jimmy Carter declared the week of March 8 as National Women’s History Week. The next year, the U.S. Congress followed suit establishing a national celebration, and a few years later the National Women’s History Project petitioned Congress to expand the event to the entire month of March.
As we celebrate the importance and significance of Women’s History Month, we also celebrate International Women’s Day. It is equally important as it’s a global celebration of the achievements of women on a political, social and economic level. Dating back to March 11, 1911, the United Nations has sponsored the day since 1975 with the United Nations General Assembly citing, “To recognize the fact that securing peace and social progress and the full enjoyment of human rights and fundamental freedoms require the active participation, equality and development of women; and to acknowledge the contribution of women to the strengthening of international peace and security.”
