The Truth About Mary Magdalene

One of the most misunderstood female figures in history, the story of Mary Magdalene deserves to be reclaimed and reconstituted. A devoted follower of Jesus, she never was the maligned figure she was painted as being. Her story has evolved over many centuries, and with this collection, we want to honor her inner strength and her importance in the life of Jesus.

The story of Mary Magdalene is as complicated as it gets. Though she has been painted as a prostitute, new research and interpretations into her story have determined that this was never the case. Her closeness to Jesus led to many distorting her image into something that never was, in order to reduce her impact. 

 

In all four canonical gospels, Mary is a witness to Jesus’s crucifixion and burial. She is also famously the first person to see Jesus after the resurrection. In later Gnostic Christian writings, she is depicted as an apostle and Jesus’s most beloved disciple. Some fictitious works have gone on to portray Mary Magdalene as Jesus’s wife.

 

It was actually in the year 591 when Pope Gregory I, in an Easter sermon, conflated Mary Magdalene with two other female figures, Mary of Bethany and an unnamed “sinful woman,” who anointed Jesus’s feet in Luke 7:36-50. For hundreds of years, the portrayal of Mary Magdalene as a prostitute persisted in the culture, though it had no basis in truth. In 1969, Pope Paul VI removed this conflation of Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany and that unnamed “sinful woman.” However, this didn’t have quite as far-reaching an effect as the story that she was a prostitute.

 

Regardless, Mary Magdalene is considered a saint in the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, and Lutheran churches. In fact, the Eastern Orthodox Church never identified Mary Magdalene with Mary of Bethany or the “sinful woman” and only always saw her as “Equal to the Apostles.”
