Selecting the Right Metal for You

Selecting the Right Metal for You

When you look at your wardrobe, are some colors missing entirely from your lineup? Do you find yourself gravitating towards some colors over others? While it could partly be attributed to personal preference, the logic behind color theory might also influence our choices without even knowing it.

Whether you’re purchasing your very first piece of jewelry or building a collection worthy of a world record, understanding the concept of color theory might open your eyes to new possibilities (and jaw-dropping layered stacks). With any wardrobe selection, the most important thing about jewelry is how you feel wearing it, so whether you follow these suggestions or march to the beat of your own drum, the choice is yours!

Generally speaking, every color has cool variants and warm variants and the same holds true for skin tones. The unique composition of warm and cool undertones in your skin produce its own unique hue. Skin tones with more yellow have warm undertones while those with more red have cool undertones. A good way to check this is by looking at the appearance of your veins. If they appear bluish or more purple, then you probably have more cool undertones. If your veins are more of a green color, then you have warmer undertones.

When considering which metal to select for your jewelry, yellow gold and rose gold highlight warm undertones whereas sterling silver and white gold compliment skin with cooler undertones.  If you have an equal balance of warm and cool in your skin, aka neutral undertones, you may find that both metals work for you.

Keep in mind that this is simply one of many factors to consider when choosing jewelry. Just like how you might channel Athena on Monday and Medusa on Friday night, the same goes for metals. Personal style, mood, and environment can play a leading role too!

Our advice is to experiment and find what works for you. Each time you go to put on your Awe jewelry, we hope it creates a spark from within.  Our goal is to create pieces that highlight beauty both inside and out so you can look and feel your best every day.
